A Candle on the Water
For our final excursion last week we headed up the coast of the Outer Banks to a little town called Corrituck. The OBX have several lighthouses and you can literally spend an entire week just touring the lighthouses. While we didn't have enough time to do that we decided to visit the Corrituck Lighthouse and grounds. We really picked this one because we could actually climb to the top of the lighthouse.
Lily got to ride in a backpack for the first time and Bob got the job of carrying the cute little burden.
She was fairly unimpressed with the whole set up, but was a good baby none the less. The Lighthouse was still in great condition and the house and grounds had been restored so that you could really get a taste for how the lighthouse keepers and their families lived. Even down to the little shanty outhouse. We headed right into the lighthouse and started our journey up to the top.
From the ground level, the stairs seemed to go on forever, around and around.
It was really fun to walk up a level, stop, look down, take a couple of pictures and then head up to the next level.
As I was climbing I was thinking about that lighthouse keeper and how often he probably climbed all of those stairs. Hopefully he never had to get up there in a hurry! The light house got tighter and tighter as we headed to the top until we went through a little door and into the fresh air. MAN, what a view! We could see the ocean and the sound as well as the OBX islands in both directions. Very cool!
It was so spectacular to stand at the rim, look out at the ocean, and think about this lighthouse. For years ocean travelers counted on the lighthouses for direction and hope. During the storms, squalls and hurricanes, ship captains peered through their windows desperately searching for light. Hoping that land was near.
Can you imagine the peace those men and women felt when out of the darkness they spotted that candle, flickering bright and true? Isn't it amazing to know that when the storms of life threaten to throw us around, make us lose hope and alter our direction, the Almighty Lighthouse shines out bright and beaming to lead us towards home. When in the dark, always look to the LIGHT!
Once we descended from the lighthouse heights we enjoyed a moments rest in the rocking chairs before packing ourselves back up in the car and heading back on home. What a wonderful trip.
