We have been overly excited to get out to Washington DC. This trip has been in the works for months and I seriously have been counting the days until we could go.
Our plan was 5 days in Washington DC and 3 days in Virginia to recover from all the walking in Washington DC. We were in for a real treat because we got to stay in a historical brownstone right in Logan Circle. It was amazing and right next to the National Mall.
Bob and I took a lovely walk on our first night in town all the way down to see the White House. DC is such a fun City.
Our first morning in DC found us up and at the Capitol! The building up close is spectacular. I couldn't wait to see the look on the girls faces.
All of us wore "cause" shirts and it was so much fun to involve the girls in a small way in policy change in the place where policies change!
We enjoyed the capitol museum while waiting for our tour time. The tour through the Capitol we amazing. Even though there were so many people, we each had headphones that our tour guide spoke into. It was so cool and everyone could hear so well.
The rotunda in the Capitol is one of the most beautiful spaces in DC. So much history on every wall.
Lily loved the entire experience. Its so great to see this competent young woman think through and acknowledge all of the history, and the nuance of the space. Great conversations happened.
We had lunch in the cafeteria and then had the chance to sit in the Senate! Senate wasn't in session, and no photographs were allowed, but the entire experience was amazing.
Even though everything is close, the distance between all of the historical spots is a bit of a walk. After our Capitol tour Bob and I set out on foot to over to the Smithsonian. This place is amazing.
The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum is filled with so many artifacts from real life and from movies. Like Star Wars!
The best artifact in the place was the original suit of Neil Armstrong. Knowing that suit has been on the moon is pretty darn cool.
We finished touring the museum and then headed down to the waterfront for dinner and our National Mall bike tour.
We passed by the National Archives and stopped in to see the Declaration of Independence. The words are slowly fading over time and I was hit with the realization that my girls are some of the last generations that will be able to make out any words on it. History matters.
We made a stop by the Spy Museum before finding our way to the water.
We had a few hours to kill so we walked the boardwalk, swung in these massive swings, rode some scooters and had some great food. The National Mall awaits!
