Scotland: Skye to Inverness

Our last day on Skye was also a travel day as we planned to make our way all the way up past Loch Ness to the City of Inverness.  It was absolutely pouring rain and cold, but we wanted to hit both the Dunvegan Castle and the Fairy Pools.

The Dunvegan Castle is owned by the MacDonalds and still serves as a residence.  Its a spectacular castle and has a fascinating place in the Jacobite history.  Flora MacDonald the Chief's daughter at the time hid Bonnie Prince Charlie following the 1745 massacre.  She dressed him up like a maid and hid the man until he could be ferreted away back to France.  It truly has a fascinating history, and the castle and grounds were gorgeous.  Oh and the dungeon?  Lord have mercy has jail changed.

Again, no pictures were allowed inside past the entrance, but the exterior was amazing.

It was windy, rainy, and foggy, but we walked the grounds. Considering the fact that many past families remained on castle grounds for most of their lives the exterior had to be enjoyable and the beauty of the gardens......breathtaking.

After leaving the castle we headed south to the Fairy Pools. I was so excited to see this hike.  Its a series of pools all connected by gorgeous waterfalls and you can hike up through all of them.

Upon entering the parking lot, the parking attendant told us that the rain had caused massive amounts of mud and that there were two river crossings with at least ankle deep water to get through.  No biggie, we have water proof socks, pants, and jackets.  Nothing is going to stop us!

I really enjoyed this hike.  Even rainy, muddy, and limited visibility didn't detract from the gorgeous waterfalls.

We were soaked from head to toe, and I turned to Bob and said, "Well, its never a dull moment with me!"

We got our warm clothes on and settled in for our road trip to Inverness.  I just had to stop by this castle again........for the view........well that and the coffee.

The drive to Inverness was probably my favorite by far. Mostly because the roads were fabulous by Scotland standards, and that the bulk of the drive was along the massive Loch Ness.  This body of water is enormous........absolutely massive.  I am a believer.  Y'all that water is dark, and there are shadows.

Nessie has got an amazing home. She can stay right where she is.

We made it into the lovely town of Inverness and I instantly fell in love.  We settled with our host and saw our super fun bathroom complete with claw foot tub before heading out for dinner and drinks.

We found this hidden Whiskey gem in the city down a little alley.  The Malt Room was fabulous and not only did we have incredible whiskeys, but met some amazing locals and a couple from CA.  World is pretty small.
